Common snook fed in alternate and continuous regimens with diet supplemented with Bacillus subtilis probiotic PAB
Noffs,André Pedro; Tachibana,Leonardo; Santos,Antenor Aguiar; Ranzani-Paiva,Maria José Tavares.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the addition of Bacillus subtilis probiotic to the feed of common snook (Centropomus undecimalis) fingerlings, in alternate and continuous regimens. Six hundred and sixty fish, with average length of 5.90±0.88 cm and weight of 1.92±0.28 g, were stocked in 12 cages of 1.0 m3, with 55 fish each. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of diet with the addition of probiotic, provided in alternate regimen for 7 days and in continuous regimen; besides a control without probiotic in the feed. Zootechnical performance, body composition, immune response, and blood parameters were evaluated. No significant differences were observed in...

Effect of beta 1,3 glucan in stress responses of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus) during transport within the rio Negro basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Abreu,Janessa S.; Brinn,Richard P.; Gomes,Levy C.; McComb,Dawn Michelle; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Zaiden,Sérgio F.; Urbinati,Elisabeth C.; Marcon,Jaydione L..
We investigated the use of beta 1,3 glucan as an imunostimulant during a transport experiment to determine the effects upon the stress response of the pencilfish (Nannostomus trifasciatus). Pencilfish were fed for seven days with different concentrations of beta 1,3 glucan: 0.0% (control); 0.01%; 0.1% and 0.5% of beta 1,3 glucan per kg of feed-1. Fish were then transported for 24 hours by boat from Barcelos to Manaus. The highest dose of beta 1,3 glucan in the food increased Na+influx after 12 hours of transport and 0.1 and 0.5% beta 1,3 glucan maintained the flux of both ions close to zero at 24 hours. All doses of beta 1,3 glucan reduced K+ loss significantly in the beginning of the transport, but after 12 to 24 hours did not. No significant differences...

The study evaluated the effect of oral administration of sulfated polysaccharides (SP) extracted from the marine macroalga Kappaphycus alvarezii on survival and weight gain of Nile tilapia post larvae during sex reversal in a stress situation. SP were extracted from the seaweed by enzymatic digestion and incorporated into the diet before the addition of the hormone 17-α-methyltestosterone, and administered at the doses of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg g-1 of body weight and a control (without SP), for 28 days. In the last week of sex reversal a stress situation was established by removing the aeration and water renewal. Survival and weight gains data were subjected to a variance analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's test for averages differentiation at significance levels...

Effects of local Polynesian plants and algae on growth and expression of two immune-related genes in orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis) ArchiMer
Reverter, Miriam; Saulnier, Denis; David, Rarahu; Bardon-albaret, Agnes; Belliard, Corinne; Tapissier-bontemps, Nathalie; Lecchini, David; Sasal, Pierre.
The emerging orbicular batfish (Platax orbicularis) aquaculture is the most important fish aquaculture industry in French Polynesia. However, bacterial infections are causing severe mortality episodes. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find an effective management solution. Besides the supplying difficulty and high costs of veterinary drugs in French Polynesia, batfish aquaculture takes place close to the coral reef, where use of synthetic persistent drugs should be restricted. Medicinal plants and bioactive algae are emerging as a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to chemical drugs. We have studied the effect of local Polynesian plants and the local opportunistic algae Asparagopsis taxiformis on batfish when orally administered. Weight gain and...

Fish Immunology. The modification and manipulation of the innate immune system: Brazilian studies Anais da ABC (AABC)
BILLER-TAKAHASHI,JAQUELINE D.; URBINATI,ELISABETH C..
The understanding of fish immune system structure and function is essential for the development of new technologies and products to improve productivity. This is the first review on immune system of fish with Brazilian studies. Aquaculture in Brazil has shown massive growth in recent years due to methods of culture intensification. However, these procedures led to disease outbreaks, as well as the chemotherapy and the misuse of antibiotics. A viable alternative to avoid the use of chemicals and prevent economic losses is the administration of immunostimulants and prebiotcs, which act by increasing the innate immune system. In Brazil there is a lack of studies on fish immune system, except by some groups that have studied the effects of the immunostimulants...

Immunomodulation of Juvenile Pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, by Different β(1-3)(1-6)-D glucan Products BABT
Sabioni,Rafael Estevan; Zanuzzo,Fábio Sabbadin; Cyrino,José Eurico Possebon.
Abstract Stress in intensive fish farming hamper immune function of fish and cause losses by disease outbreaks, a situation that can be minimized, but cannot be completely circumvented, by the use of immunomodulators. Addition of immunomodulators to aquafeeds has thus become a common practice. β-glucan (BG) is one of most studied and effective immunomodulators, aquaculture purposes included. Extracted from cell walls of bacteria, fungi and selected cereals, BG activity depends on the source and extraction methods. This study evaluated effects of two BG products (BG1 and BG2), extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae under varying extraction methods and with different immune activity, on the feeding of pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus juveniles. BG1 provided...

Inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis as inducer of immunity in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) Anais da ABC (AABC)
PAVAN,TATIANA R.; NIED,CRISTIAN O.; NORO,MIRELA; ANZILIERO,DENIZ; FRANDOLOSO,RAFAEL; KREUTZ,LUIZ CARLOS.
ABSTRACT Molecules with immune modulating activity are ubiquitously distributed in nature and their impact on aquaculture has been exploited in order to increase fish resistance to pathogens. Here, we investigated the effect of inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) on blood cells and innate and acquired immune response of silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). iPPVO inoculation had no effect on respiratory burst activity; however, following iPPVO inoculation, we observed a significant decrease on circulating monocytes concomitantly with an increased number of heterophilic granulocytes and thrombocytes, which are the main cells involved in innate immunity and provide connection with acquired immunity. Fish inoculated with a combination of bovine serum albumin...

Inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis induces a transient increase in the expression of proinflammatory, Th1-related, and autoregulatory cytokines in mice BJMBR
Anziliero,D.; Weiblen,R.; Kreutz,L.C.; Spilki,F.; Flores,E.F..
The immunostimulatory properties of inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis (iPPVO) have long been investigated in different animal species and experimental settings. In this study, we investigated the effects of iPPVO on cytokine expression in mice after intraperitoneal inoculation. Spleen and sera collected from iPPVO-treated mice at intervals after inoculation were submitted to cytokine mRNA determination by real-time PCR (qPCR), serum protein concentration by ELISA, and interferon (IFN)-α/β activity by bioassay. The spleen of iPPVO-treated animals showed a significant increase in mRNA expression of all cytokines assayed, with different kinetics and magnitude. Proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and IL-8 mRNA peaked...

Liposomes: from biophysics to the design of peptide vaccines BJMBR
Frézard,F..
Liposomes (lipid-based vesicles) have been widely studied as drug delivery systems due to their relative safety, their structural versatility concerning size, composition and bilayer fluidity, and their ability to incorporate almost any molecule regardless of its structure. Liposomes are successful in inducing potent in vivo immunity to incorporated antigens and are now being employed in numerous immunization procedures. This is a brief overview of the structural, biophysical and pharmacological properties of liposomes and of the current strategies in the design of liposomes as vaccine delivery systems.
